American Councils Moldova has become an expert in implementing online collaborative projects involving young adults from Eurasia and developing their civic responsibility: FLEX (FutureLeaders Exchangehttp://www.americancouncils.md/flex)and Access http://www.americancouncils.md/access are two examples of our most notorious projects. The session aims to share from our international experience in integrating technology in EFL and combining it successfully with community development projects involving youth. It will assist participants in learning a series of online tools which can bring a civic engagement or community development element in the EFL/ESL classroom. If you would like your students to learn English using fun online tools and become responsible citizens, then this is a session to join! Each practical session will be built around one or several case studies - we believe learning by example is the best way!

Outcomes/Goals

In the course of the 5 weeks, participants will learn collaboratively and hands on to:

- use various fun synchronous and asynchronous web tools for learning and teaching EFL/ESL through project based/content based instruction, while involving students in various community development projects
- work in teams with international partners and learn how to bring the civic engagement element in their teaching practice (through online content based instruction) by examining case studies provided by American Councils (mainly FLEX http://www.americancouncils.md/flexand Access Programs http://www.americancouncils.md/access) and iEARN (International Education and Resource Network), CIVICS: Youth Volunteerism and Service (http://us.iearn.org/sites/default/files/site_files/pdf/Civicsonepage.pdf), Voyage: Volunteer of Youth (https://collaborate.iearn.org/space-2/group-100) and Future Citizen projects (http://collaborate.iearn.org/space-2/group-86).

Weekly Outline

Week 1 (Jan 13 - 19, 2014)

Introducing ourselves and getting acquainted with "Online Civic Engagement Project"concept


During this first week, participants will:
  • become familiar with the group tools and forums (Google+ and Wikispaces)
  • introduce themselves and begin to establish connections with each other
  • describe their teaching profile, learners, and their IT skills
  • attend a live online session with moderators

Week 2 (Jan 20 - 26, 2014)

Introduction to the "online civic engagement youth project" concept


During the second week, participants will:
  • discuss the ”civic engagement” concept
  • explore students made projects as part of the World Bank Essay Competiton
  • learn about how to use various online tools to create civic engagement projects (Animoto, Voicethread, Photo Story for Windows 3)
  • choose an online tool from the list provided and create a short project, then post it online in the Google+ online community
  • evaluate other participants projects and provide feedback
  • attend a live online session with moderators

Week 3 (Jan 27 - Feb 2, 2014)

Developing an ESL/EFL civic engagement project lesson plan


During the third week, participants will:
  • explore several student projects within the Access Microscholarship Project administered by American Councils

  • learn how to use online tools to organize, convert, edit and prezent information online: Prezi, Creaza, ZohoShow, Yamyar, Text to Speech Translator, TargetMap, Mixbook
  • develop a Civic Engagement Project, following a project template suggested by the moderators
  • create an online story book, using www.kerpoof.com platform

Week 4 (Feb 3 - Feb 9, 2014)

Effectively using Facebook for ESL/EFL civic engagement youth project

By the end of the 4th week, participants will:

- join our project Facebook group for online discussion- learn about new ways to integrate Facebook in civic engagement projects- explore civic engagement projects implemented by English Teaching Resource Center
- experiment with online brainstorming tools- generate a word cloud to address a civic issue using http://www.tagxedo.com/- post pictures or posters addressing a civic issue


Week 5 (Feb 10 -16, 2014)

Graduating as an "online tools for ESL/EFL civic engagement youth projects" expert - creating a Webquest

During this week, participants will:
  • collect various resources, links, and materials related to civic engagement youth projects
  • elaborate a Webquest which integrates several online tools and aims to encourage student civic participation
  • share and discuss your own ideas for integrating online civic engagement projects in class
  • reflect on the tools you have experimented with and come up with ideas how these can be applied in your teaching practices
  • revisit the online tool list
  • comment on each other’s posts / projects / lesson plans ideas
  • complete an online evaluation about your experience
